There are many ways to make money blogging online, such as affiliate marketing, selling digital or informational products as well as using ads like Google AdSense or offering One on One Coaching to name a few.
As the great Bob Dylan would say; “The Times They Are A-Changin.”
Cov-19 is wrecking havoc on our physical, emotional and financial health.
Times are tough.
Many are wondering how in the world they are going to make it?
Lockdowns, business closings, layoffs and economic instability have become the order of the day.
Although I’m sure we will get back to “normal” at some point, I believe there’s been a fundamental shift – an inflection point that has, forever, altered the way we live, interact and make a living.
There’s a new normal.
As bad as things have been, however, there are some bright spots.
One of them is the online business space. Consider this – according to Marketwatch, Amazon made more money in the first 9 months of 2020 then it did in all of 2019, which was also a record year.
Obviously, there are many factors contributing to this growth. But what excites me is the fact that people have become more comfortable doing commerce online.
Out of necessity/convenience, people are doing a lot of shopping online, and I see no reason why that will change any time soon, if at all.
Additionally, “work from home” has increased exponentially.
That said, being in the online business space is a great place to be right now.
One way to enter the space is blogging. But how do you make money online blogging?
Make Money Blogging – A Path To Success
Let’s face it, for a lot of reasons, the old days of working for a company all your life has changed. Job security isn’t what it used to be. The loyalty element seems to be gone for good.
That’s the bad news.
But here’s the good.
More and more people are returning to the old days when most people were entrepreneurs in some form or fashion.
Freelancing. Coaching. YouTubers. Influences etc, are all growing due, in no small part, to the web/internet.
Just think about it. The web doesn’t care how old you are. What you race is or how “educated” you are. If you give people value people will respond.
One of the best avenues to give value is through blogging. If you have a passion, hobby or expertise of some kind, there is an audience for you – people who are looking for that information.
Blogging is a great way to provide it!
If you’re interested in starting a blog or are just getting started… good for you!
Make Money Blogging Online
So, practically how do you start to make money online blogging?
Start With a Niche Site
So why a niche?
To be honest, as a new blogger you’re like a minnow swimming in shark-infested waters. And the sharks are hungry.
If you’re not savvy, you WILL BE DEVOURED.
Google’s ranking system gives preference to more established sites – the “big boys”. It’s called domain authority. There’s a bunch of factors that provide a website’s authority.
Factors like – length and quality of content. Age of content. Number of backlinks etc. So as a newbie – you’re at a huge disadvantage.
Take a market or industry like “weight loss” there are hundreds of big players that would make it nearly impossible, for you to gain any significant presense.
So how do you compete?
Well there are a few strategies you can use for this.
The first, and most important, is picking a profitable niche.
So instead of taking on weight loss as a broad category, you drill down.
For example, get specific.
Rather than write about the broad subject of weight loss, how about this?
“weight loss using a plant-based diet”
or more specific…
“weight loss using a plant-based diet for women”
or even more specific..
“weight loss using a plant-based diet for women over 40”
Now, this is only an example. If I were just starting a niche site, I would stay away from “weight loss” as the market is just too competitive, but you get the picture.
Focus on your passion, interests and expertise when deciding on your niche.
It’s going to take some time for you to gain traction, and you’ll never stick with it if you’re not truly passionate or, at least, interested in it.
From there it’s a matter of getting traffic, building an email list and monetization.
First things, first.
Build a Website
You’re going to need a website. This is where you bring people into your community, showcase your authority and expertise by providing value via great content.
There are basically two options:
- Hire a website designer
- Build it yourself
Whatever choice you make, remember this – Don’t Overthink It!
You don’t need thousands of dollars to build a website. Maybe if it’s an e-commerce site, but for a blogging niche site it’s totally unnecessary and can actually be counterproductive.
The most important thing is that the website be “clean/uncluttered”, fast and functional.
If you’re just uncomfortable creating a website yourself, reach out to freelancers and designers to get a quote. Make sure you see samples of their work and ask a lot of questions.
There are also hosting companies (like bluehost) that offer website design.
But if you’re a little brave (it’s really not that hard I promise) you can do it yourself. To help I’ve written a complete guide that you can use.
It will take you step by step through the process: WordPress For Website Design
You’ll Need Content
Write great content. Provide Value.
If you’ve been around blogging for even a short time you’ve heard this language. The problem is, rarely does anyone explain what that mean practically. How do you quantify value or great content?
Well to simplify things, I would say if you’re writing “great” content, “value” is inherent in the content itself.
Really, you ask?
I’m sure your next question might be… well then how the heck are you defining “great” content?
I’m glad you asked, and I feel your frustration.
It took me months of research and scouring of the web to get an answer.
In short, it’s content that answers a question the user has, gives them useful/pertinent information and/or teaches them something they’re interested in.
Unless you’re doing these things you won’t gain an audience and the few that might visit your site will probably never come back.
Additionally, and maybe more importantly, Google will NOT rank your site very well.
Given that, I want to be of value to you, so I’ve written a complete article on how to do this.
Trust me. It will save you a ton of time and uncertainty.
Once you understand how to create great content and generate traffic you’ll want to do the fun part…
This post is about making money blogging. Right? So, if you’ve picked your niche and built your website you’re going to want to generate some income.
How do you do that? There are several ways. I’m going to talk about a few of them.
Google Ads are one of the easiest and quickest ways to monetize your website. Unlike some programs, you don’t need a minimum threshold of traffic to qualify.
This makes it a good choice for beginners.
Here are the Pros and Cons.
- East to set up
- Can be used by beginners and more advanced bloggers
- No need to create ads
- No setup fee
- $100 Payment Threshold – You don’t get paid until you reach $100 in earnings
- Has one of the lowest ROI – one of the lowest paying ad networks
- You have to run Google Ads exclusively
While Google AdSense is a good place to start, there are better options once you gain more traffic.
One of them is Ezoic. They pay much higher rates than AdSense, but they have more stringent requirement, such as they recommend you have at least 10,000 sessions on your site.
So as a new blogger you’ll want to wait before explore this option.
What is affiliate marketing?
It’s a program whereby an affiliate promotes another company’s product.
In exchange, when someone buys that product through a special link provided for the affiliate, the affiliate is paid a commission.
The great thing about affiliate marketing, especially for beginners, is that you don’t need your own product. Additionally, fulfillment, customer service, returns etc., are all handled by the said company.
There’s no inventory to worry about or overhead.
Amazon has a program that many beginners and advanced marketers participate in. It’s an easy way to get started and can generate a bit of income.
The downside is, however, that unless you have mega traffic there won’t be much by way of real income.
While it isn’t great if you have limited traffic let me suggest you sign up. As a beginner it’s a good place to get in and comfortable with the affiliate market.
While Amazon pays relatively small percentages to affiliates, informational products provide much greater returns.
They’re usually digital, which means that once they are created they can be mass duplicated with virtually no cost.
There’s no inventory, shipping costs (they’re delivered via downloads) and almost no overhead they pay much higher commissions – sometimes as high as 100% !
So where do you find these products?
The most convenient way is to join an affiliate network. There are quite a few to choose from. One of the most popular, particularly for informational products is Clickbank.
They’re sign-up is easy, and they handle all payments. Here’s an article that will take you through the entire process: How To Make Money With Clickbank
One on One Coaching
Admittedly, this is not my space. I am well aware that many people are using this business model. For example a fitness expert invites they’re audience to sign up for individual fitness coaching.
Because of the technology they can connect with their client via Zoom or some other video conferencing platform.
The only problem with this model is that it’s hard to scale. After all, there is only one of you.
But if it’s something you love, you can make it work.
I hope you enjoyed “make money blogging online”. Making money with a blog can be a profitable and rewarding way to make money online.
It takes, patience and hard work but it can be done.
